Combination Sum Finder

A tool that finds which numbers from a list add up to a target value. Common use cases include:

Accounting & reconciliation — match invoices, payments, or journal entries to a bank total.
Auditing — identify which line items compose a subtotal on a financial statement.
General puzzles — solve subset-sum problems with real decimal numbers.

Textarea: Paste numbers one per line (e.g. from Excel). Supports commas, spaces, and apostrophes as thousands separators.
📁 Import: Import numbers from a .csv, .txt, or .xlsx file. You can also drag & drop a file onto the textarea.
🗑 Clear: Reset all numbers, targets, settings, and results to defaults.

Each parsed number appears as a row with three action buttons:

🎯 Send to Target: Add this number as a target sum (shown with [L#] marker in the target field). Click again to remove. Useful when one of your numbers is the target.
📌 Pin: Force this number into every result (must be part of the solution). With Pin-to-target enabled, click cycles through: All targets → T1 → T2 → … → unpin.
✕ Exclude / ↩ Include: Remove a number from the search without deleting it. Excluded lines appear dimmed with a strikethrough.

Single target: Enter one number — the app finds all combinations that sum to it.
Multiple targets (batch): Enter several numbers (one per line) to search them all in sequence. Results appear in a multi-column layout for 2–4 targets.
Disallow line reuse across targets: Lines consumed by the first result of target 1 are excluded from target 2, and so on — useful for allocating invoices to multiple payments.
Pin-to-target: When enabled, the pin button cycles through specific targets, forcing a line into a particular target’s results only.

Distinct by value: Skip duplicate permutations when multiple lines have the same value.
Allow reuse: Let a number appear more than once in a single combination (like coin change).
Stop after first match: Return immediately after finding one valid combination.
Closest match: If no exact match exists, find the subset whose sum is nearest to the target. You can set the max number of lines to consider.
Search order: Largest first tends to find solutions faster when big items dominate; smallest first suits many small values.
Max length: Limit how many numbers can appear in one combination (0 = unlimited).
Max results: Cap the number of combinations returned to avoid overwhelming output.
Time limit: Abort the search after this many milliseconds to prevent browser freezes.
± Tolerance: Accept sums within this delta of the target (useful for rounding differences).

Collapse the settings panel by clicking the × button; click the ⚙ gear icon to reopen.

Combination cards: Each card shows the numbers, their sum, and source line numbers. Hover to highlight those lines in the line list.
Click to select: Click a card to “select” it. Selected lines are marked in the line list and a Selection Summary panel appears with grand totals. Conflicting cards (sharing a line) are dimmed.
📋 Copy / { } JSON / ⬇ CSV: Export results in plain text, JSON, or CSV format.
≈ Closest match banner: When no exact combination exists and Closest match is enabled, a yellow banner shows the best near-miss with its delta.

History bar: Keeps your last 10 searches. Click Restore to reload a previous search’s numbers, targets, and settings.
Named sessions: Use the session bar to Save as… a named workspace. Switch between saved sessions from the dropdown. Delete sessions you no longer need.
Auto-save: Your current state (numbers, targets, settings, line states) is automatically saved to the browser and restored on reload.

Toggle between dark and light mode with the sun/moon button in the header. Your preference is remembered.

For large datasets (100+ numbers), set a time limit and max results to keep things responsive.
Use pin to force known matches into the solution — the search space shrinks dramatically.
Use exclude to remove irrelevant lines without deleting them.
The 🎯 button lets you quickly move a pasted number into the target field with its line number preserved.
All arithmetic is integer-scaled internally — no IEEE-754 floating-point rounding errors.
